Surrounding Area
Auchterawe Country House is set in the countryside, within easy walking distance of riverside and mountain tracks. There are several circular walks which can be taken, some up the mountains tracks giving you panoramic views of Fort Augustus and the Abbey, the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness beyond. Or you could take a walk along the River Oich and even watch the fishermen catching a wild salmon (in season).
Fort Augustus is the largest and one of the prettiest villages surrounding Loch Ness. It is at Fort Augustus that the Caledonian Canal, which stretches from Fort William right through to Inverness, rises through a 5 lock staircase to continue southwards to Fort William and out to the Atlantic Ocean. There is always plenty to see and do, with cafes, pubs, restaurants and gifts shops, as well as Fort Augustus Abbey.
Urquhart Castle is only 17 miles away and is the 3rd most visited place in Scotland. Famous for the numerous sightings of the Loch Ness monster, this ruined castle gives you an insight into times gone by and also offers you the history of the castle, a cafe and exhibition centre.
Within easy driving distance of Auchterawe Country House is the city of Inverness, Culloden Battlefield, Fort William, Mallaig, Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, Plockton and many more interesting places.
