The ancient Mackenzies of Coul picked a wonderful situation for this classic country house hotel. Originally built in 1821 for Sir George Mackenzie as a traditional hunting lodge, its stunning views over the Strathconon Valley and Achilty mountains beyond, eight acres of mature woodland, private 9-hole pitch and putt and unique octagonal dining room make it an ideal venue for a quiet getaway, small wedding or conference.
Surrounding Area
The small village of Contin sits on the banks of the River Conon and is a fantastic spot for nature lovers with attractions including the Achility Forest with miles of bike and walking trials; Rogie Waterfalls with salmon leaping throughout the summer; secluded lochs, including Loch Ness; and abundant wildlife combined with stunning views over Strathconon Valley. Coul House is located close to places of interest such as Dingwall, Beauly Firth and Jamestown.
Transport
By Car
- Follow the A9 north over the Kessock Bridge.
- At the Tore roundabout, take the 2nd left, signposted Dingwall and Ullapool A835.
- At the next roundabout, take the second left to stay on the A835, signposted to Ullapool.
- The next village is Contin, about 6 miles from the roundabout.
- Once in Contin, the entrance to the driveway is the 3rd right (approximately 200 yards) after the petrol station.
- The hotel is located up the hill at the end of the half-mile gravel driveway.
By Public Transport:
Inverness Airport is just a 40-minute drive away. The nearest train station is in Dingwall, with links to Inverness. A regular bus service stops at the entrance of the drive to Coul House Hotel.

The grand octagonal-shape restaurant, which is the centrepiece of the hotel, has an intricately stuccoed ceiling complete with Greek key, thistle and Celtic knot motifs.
In the evenings you'll often see beautiful sunsets through the 3 ceiling-to-floor windows, which offer fabulous views of the surrounding area. Both a grill and an à la carte menu are available, offering contemporary gourmet meals. Ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible, often featuring Scottish game, local Salmon, homemade breads, pastries and delightful desserts.
