Hotel Information
Mount Edgcombe, originally a smart Victorian 'gentleman's residence', has retained much of its original charm, but at the same time provides guests with modern-day comforts. It has a quiet location yet is within easy walking distance of the seafront and many major attractions.
Surrounding Area
Mount Edgcombe is ideally situated, away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre but within easy walking distance of the sea front, the Princess Theatre and other amenities. We can highly recommend our local restaurant, which is just 5 minutes walk down the road. Booking is sometimes advisable; let us do it for you. The Riviera Centre with its conference facilities, sporting activities and swimming pool and the recently restored Torre Abbey are both also just 5 minutes' walk away.
The famous hamlet of Cockington is close by - a few minutes by car. But why not walk the lovely footpath from the seafront through the water meadows - a mile or so but well worth the effort. You could take a horse and carriage ride around the fabulous grounds while you're there.
For a more challenging walk, in Torbay a 22-mile (35 km) thread of the South West Coastal Path (recently voted the country's favourite long distance walk) binds together areas of great beauty and wildlife importance such as Maidencombe, Hope's Nose, Saltern Cove and the Nature Reserve of Berry Head.
Other fascinating places to visit in the area are Kents Cavern (2 miles/3.2 km) Paignton Zoo (4 miles/6.5 km) and the home of Agatha Christie - Greenway, on the banks of the river Dart (6 miles/10 km).
Transport
Travel from m5 Exeter to the a38, then follow signs for Torquay a380. At Newton Abbot, you will reach Penn Inn Roundabout. Take the second exit signposted Torquay a380. At the next roundabout, go straight over the a3022. Do not turn right (continuation of the a380). Follow the a3022 into Torquay. At the sixth set of lights, get into the a3022 right hand lane (signposted sea front, harbour, Paignton). This is Avenue Road. The Mount Edgcombe Hotel is situated just under half a mile down on the left hand side (second hotel after the next set of traffic lights) opposite Cockington Primary School.
Restaurants
The bright and airy ground-floor dining room overlooks the pretty courtyard. The popular evening-meal menu offers a range of delicious starters and traditional main-course dishes. The extremely varied dessert menu includes a wide selection of home-baked favourites. An excellent local butcher supplies the meat, the fish comes from Brixham docks, and fresh vegetables are bought daily in order to provide tasty, home-cooked meals. Vegetarian options are available.
